The is a grade 5 walking holiday. There are several types of paths on Madeira; almost completely flat levada paths which run beside the water channels criss-crossing the island; mountain paths through the central area around Curral das Freiras or the major peaks which can be steep at times; engineered paths, sometimes along cobbled or vehicle tracks, which descend towards the coast and coastal paths which undulate high above the sea. Some of the walks along the high peaks are dependant on weather conditions so may not be possible. Some days are half days whereas other days will be full days. Some walks may have optional opt out points, please speak to your leader for more information.
To enjoy the walks you need a good head for heights and to be prepared for occasional long descents of around 1000m. Although the holiday is a Grade 5 there are some walks that are more a Grade 6 due to long descents of up to 1,250m. The maximum altitude we reach on this holiday is 1,870m.
Thoughtfully designed, meticulously planned, carefully graded, and expertly guided walking tours and hiking holidays along well-loved and off-the-beaten-track footpaths.
Overview
Indulge in the ultimate Madeira experience with our two week holiday, a combination of our one week Eastern Madeira holiday and our one week Western Madeira holiday.
If you have a passion for walking, a strong affinity for heights, and haven't yet had the pleasure of experiencing the beauty of Madeira, then you're in for an unforgettable holiday.
The name "Madeira" in Portuguese means wood, aptly reflecting the island's lush forests that sprawl across the island. Madeira is the perfect walker’s island, with an extensive network of well maintained footpaths through very varied terrain. Renowned for its iconic levada footpaths, these trails run alongside water channels that cut through the island's rugged mountains, connecting the relatively wet northern half to the comparatively dry southern regions and supplying water to the island's most populated areas of Madeira.
As you journey along the coast, you'll be greeted by subtropical vegetation including banana palms and apple trees. On the terraced slopes, agapanthus and an array of vibrant flowers, including hydrangeas and bird of paradise plants add a burst of colour to the surroundings. Ascending higher, you'll encounter forests of laurisilva before the peaks pushing towards 2000m, offering panoramic views that stretch across the island and beyond to the Atlantic. Madeira has a comfortable all year-round climate, making it the ideal walkers paradise.
This two week holiday starts in the modern city of Funchal, with its dramatic mountainous lush green backdrop, an ideal centre for exploring Funchal and the more challenging walks of Madeira. Your second centre is the little visited village of Porto Moniz, in the far northwest, with its sheltered harbour where a mass of pointed reefs provide unique natural bathing pools. Walking here is different to other parts of the island, and the centre itself is stunning. Your final centre is the quiet little town of Ponta do Sol, nestled between two mountains in the south of the island and known as one of the sunniest points of Madeira.
Choosing the best walk is a delightful challenge. Will it be the high-level traverse between the island's two highest peaks, Pico Arieiro and Pico Ruivo? Perhaps the journey from Boca da Corrida, descending through the lush, eroded crater of an ancient volcano to Curral das Freiras, boasting spectacular views of the lofty peaks? Or maybe the high-level traverse from Boca do Risco along the North Coast, culminating in the seaside town of Porto da Cruz, where you can enjoy a refreshing drink on the beach? Madeira offers to many walking opportunities waiting to be explored.
Although our two week holiday is Grade 5, our walks from Funchal could also be described as Grade 6 due to some longer descents. Please see our Holiday Information Sheet for more details.
Our December holidays operate with a reversed itinerary, where you'll visit Porto Moniz first. Then travel to Ponta do Sol and end your holiday with 7 nights in Funchal. Please see our Holiday Information Sheet for these specific dates for more details.

Famed for its levadas originating in the 15th century and rare endemic species of flowers that grow in ancient laurel forest, Madeira is an excellent walking destination with a steady year-round climate.
Spend two weeks hopping between four colourful islands in the Azores Archipelago.
Follow the path of the Douro River as it meanders through an enchanting landscape of ever changing colours, and sample delicious Portuguese wines as you go!
Exploring lesser known coasts, trace the famous levada footpaths and pass through forests of laurisilva with panoramic views across the island.

You stay in twin and double bedded rooms. Single rooms are double for sole use. Rooms are typical of a city hotel and are slightly smaller, but are uniquely decorated with photos of various 1960's icons. European Passport Advice
If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.
Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:
For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.
Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.
Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.
Breakfast and dinners are included in the holiday price. Hotel breakfasts are buffet style and include a variety of dishes such as fresh fruit, salad, yoghurt, cold meats, cereal, eggs, bacon, breads, cake and pastries.
Dinners are taken in local restaurants during your stay in Funchal so you can immerse yourself in the local culture and explore more of the towns. The hotel's perfect locations also mean you can enjoy a walk to and from dinner, maybe even venture further for a drink in a local bar afterwards! You'll enjoy an authentic experience and sometimes lively atmosphere in a traditional restaurant along with local diners. Madeiran dishes are usually created using locally sourced fresh ingredients, and usually consist of soup, meat or fish, vegetables and potatoes. During the quieter winter months, many local restaurants close for the season. Therefore, you may eat in the hotel more and you may eat in the same restaurant more than once as availability of open restaurants could be limited.
During your stay in Porto Moniz and Ponta do Sol, enjoy dinners in the hotels highly rated restaurants where you can enjoy delicious local delicacies.
Lunches are not included in the holiday price and these can be taken as picnics or in local cafes.
During the festive holiday dates, dinners are taken in the Enotel Sunset Bay where you enjoy a festive atmosphere with delicious local delicacies at Christmas. On Christmas Eve, savour celebratory drinks and a festive buffet. After dinner hotel guests join local families at the Christmas Eve mass in the local church a short stroll from the hotel. Christmas Eve is celebrated more than Christmas Day in Madeira. Christmas Day is usually quieter and families eat and gather around the Christmas tree at home. Celebrate Christmas Day with a quieter but delicious festive dinner in the Enotel Sunset Bay's highly rated restaurant. Fresh fish and pork are usually the main dishes of traditional Christmas dinner in Madeira. Enjoy New Years eve in Funchal in local restaurants with a great celebratory atmosphere where the streets are filled with tourists and locals enjoying the fireworks.

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.
The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.
Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.
In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.
If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you being unable to demonstrate that you are insured.
Our house broker MPI should be considered for whom we are an affiliate and contact information is on our website and will be referred to in your booking confirmation.
If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). You can apply for a UK GHIC free of charge on the NHS website at https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/cra/start.
EHIC & GHIC Cards
Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.
It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.
